TRYING

On Tuesday, I kept my eyes on Mr. Pratt, with my hand resting on the page that seemed like the day’s topic. And I visualized my basketball tryout, on tap for that afternoon. But Reagan kept crashing my daydreams. Either we were exchanging passes, or I was taking the wing as she drove the middle on a fast break, or she yelled, “In. The. Hoop!” when I launched a promising shot.

My brain just didn’t process basketball without her. There was the ball and the basket and Reagan.

“Mr. Holt?” said Mr. Pratt. “Is there a reason you are staring at Ms. Wilson instead of me?”

God. My face turned into a Vivid Violet crayon. I didn’t have to look at Kevin to know we had a matching set.

“She is a lot prettier,” said Brain D.

The class collectively giggled.

Mr. Pratt scowled. “I asked Mr. Holt, not you, Mr. Dowling.”

“Oh,” Brain D. said.

Scattered giggles.

Mr. Pratt frowned. “Mr. Holt?”

Kevin said nothing, as always.

“So I see your restraint from classroom communication extends past the mathematical to the personal,” said Mr. Pratt.

It struck me that real words came out of Mr. Pratt’s mouth only for the personal and not the mathematical.

Mr. Pratt took a few steps toward Kevin. “Okay, then, detention with me after school, Mr. Holt. Again.”

Kevin didn’t even acknowledge Pratt.

Brain D. turned slightly when Mr. Pratt picked up his marker. “Jerk,” he whispered to the aisle.

Kevin shrugged.
